ChatE-AL (generic brand) is a hormonal contraceptive that contains both an estrogen and a progestin. In the U.S., it is only available by prescription. It comes in pill form, with 28 pills per pack. One pill is taken daily as follows:
- The first 21 pills each contain 17 micrograms of ethinyl estradiol (ethinyl E2, EE), a synthetic estrogen, along with 100 micrograms of levonorgestrel (LNG), a progestin, and are taken once daily for 21 days in each cycle.

Let me tell you my story. I am a 20 year old female. I have always been skinny and fit. I have never had to eat diets or workout excessively to stay this way. I started taking the birth control Chateal about 7months ago. At first everything was fine but after about a month of being on it my body changed drastically.
I went from being 106 pounds to 126 pounds in 6 weeks. I also noticed that I was having mood swings, crying for no reason, and felt depressed all the time. My breasts became very tender, I would get yeast infections constantly, my hair was falling out more than usual, and I would get sick almost every other week.
My doctor told me when i first started the pill that if i gain weight he would put me on another one but now that i’ve gained 20 pounds he says there is nothing he can do because its not normal to gain weight on this pill (which i know its not) but they don’t understand why im gaining weight because they tested me to see if my thyroid was over or under active and it came back normal!
All of my results came back normal so it has to be the pill right?

Chateal does not cause weight gain. That being said, I have seen some women gain weight who use this medication. The reason for the weight gain is related to water retention. This is not a direct effect from the hormone in Chateal but it is indirectly related because of the water retention.
