Before surgery, Hunter Schafer’s family members were summoned to his room. They told Hunter that he would be going into the operating room soon. They also apologized for lying to him about his condition and promised that they would tell him everything after he received his surgery. The doctors reassured them that Hunter would be fine and that the surgery would be a success. The family then hugged each other and cried before saying goodbye. Hunter was taken into the operating room, where he was put under anesthesia and prepared for surgery. He was placed on an operating table and given a mask to breathe oxygen through while the anesthesiologist monitored his vital signs throughout the operation. On the day of surgery, I was nervous. My parents had to get me there early so that they could sign me in, and then we waited in the waiting room with some other kids who were also having surgery. They were all younger than me, and they seemed to be having a good time. I felt like an old man next to them — it was weird. Finally, one of the nurses came out and called my name; she took us back to where I would get changed into my blue hospital gown. Then she left us alone for a few minutes while my parents helped me get undressed and into the gown. We all sat down on the bed together (it was really uncomfortable for me because I had staples in my chest), and she came back in with a tray full of little white pills. She handed each of us three or four pills, depending on how old we were — but we didn’t know what they were at the time! Then she told us about how these pills were going to help keep us from getting sick after our surgeries — because we’d be getting lots of shots right away! That sounded pretty bad. But

And then one day while flipping through his photos, Hunter noticed something odd on one of them: a lump on his back near his shoulder blade. It turned out to be another tumor — this time non-Hodgkin lymphoma — which meant more chemo and radiation therapy for Hunter!
Afterwards Hunter started working at a restaurant called The Black Pig and has been there ever since (he even helped open their new location). He wanted to find a job where he could use his creativity and cooking skills at the same time so this fit perfectly with what he wanted.”
Surgery has always been a scary thought for me. It’s a necessary evil, but it’s still scary. I’m not a fan of pain or foreign objects inside my body, so I was really nervous about going under the knife. My surgeon was amazing and made me feel at ease about the procedure.
The day of surgery, I had to wake up early. When I got to the hospital, I met my anesthesiologist, who explained everything he was going to do during the surgery and talked me through how I would feel afterwards (very groggy and sore). After that, they gave me some medicine to make sure I didn’t feel anything during the surgery — it’s kind of like drinking NyQuil — and then they took me back to where they were going to perform the procedure.
I woke up in recovery with my wife sitting next to me holding my hand (she came along even though most people don’t). The first thing I remember is asking her if we had kids yet because she missed them so much while she was pregnant with them that we thought maybe she might have been pregnant again without telling me (we weren’t). Schafer’s inspiration to lose weight comes from his family. “My wife and I have four kids under the age of 7,” he says. “I wanted them to be able to see me at my best.”

Hunter Schafer is a 17-year-old boy from Texas who was born with a rare genetic disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. The condition affects the connective tissues in his body, which causes him to break bones easily and leaves him with a hunched back and curved spine.
