During the first week after your procedure, you will probably experience significant swelling and bruising around your eyes and nose. You may also notice some puffiness in your nasal area for up to three weeks after your procedure.
Most patients experience mild to moderate bruising and swelling for about two weeks following surgery. After this time period, most of the bruising will have disappeared and you will be able to return to work or school without worrying about noticeable facial discoloration. However, you can expect some lingering swelling for up to six months following surgery.
Swelling can cause the nose to look different or misshapen during the healing process. You should not worry about this because most of the swelling will subside within a few months. Dr. Stevens tells all his patients to be patient with healing because it is a slow process that cannot be rushed.

Rhinoplasty swelling is a natural part of the healing process, but can be quite dramatic. The key to understanding rhinoplasty swelling is that it follows a predictable pattern, which you can see in these photos.
Immediately after surgery you will have a significant amount of swelling on your nose as well as some bruising around your eyes. This is normal and expected, but can be very frightening to patients who are not expecting it. Over the next few days the bruising and swelling will decrease significantly, with most of it resolved by two weeks. While some residual swelling will remain for up to a year or longer, most rhinoplasty patients look very good within a month or two after their procedure.

The reason for rhinoplasty swelling is simple: when tissues are separated (as they are during plastic surgery), fluid accumulates between the cells. Additionally, blood vessels leak fluid into surrounding tissues when they are disrupted. This fluid collection causes edema or swelling, which usually peaks about 48 hours after surgery and then begins to resolve over 2-3 days. Swelling takes about six months to one year to fully resolve. If you are looking for the final result of your nose job, this is the time frame you should use to evaluate your outcome. After rhinoplasty surgery, most patients will notice a majority of the swelling has resolved in 6 weeks, with mild residual swelling that can persist for several months. Patients should also be aware that they will not see their final result before this time frame.
The first month after rhinoplasty is a very important time period. This is when most of the post-op swelling will occur, and the changes in shape are more pronounced than at any other time during the healing process. In fact, many patients report that their nose was swollen for about 3 or 4 weeks after surgery before it began to feel better each day. Most surgeons will recommend using cold compresses for at least a week after rhinoplasty to help reduce swelling as much as possible. Although it may seem counterintuitive, applying ice packs to your face helps decrease blood flow and inflammation in the area and can lead to faster healing and recovery times.
Swelling is a common side effect of a nose job, and it can occur for up to a year after your procedure. But swelling does not appear uniformly over this time frame — it can come and go in waves.

Day of Surgery: Immediate Swelling
After surgery, your nose will be swollen. It will be wrapped in bandages and a splint may be applied for support to reduce bleeding and swelling. The amount of swelling can vary from patient to patient and may make it difficult to see your final results immediately.
Three Weeks: External Swelling
Your nose will still be swollen during this first month. The tip of your nose will be the last area to see any significant changes. During the recovery process, you may experience some numbness, which is normal and should subside within several months.
Six Weeks: Subsiding Swelling
During this period, most patients find that their swelling has decreased significantly, though it is common to still have some swelling around the tip of your nose as well as your nostrils. Your doctor can tell you when it is safe to resume normal activities, such as exercise or sports.
Six Months: Residual Swelling
After six months, most patients will have experienced a significant reduction in swelling, though some residual swelling may remain in the tip area for up to a year after surgery. This is normal and should not cause alarm if you are otherwise healing normally.
How Long Does it Take for Rhinoplasty Swelling to Go Down?
Rhinoplasty swelling can be frustrating, especially if you are eager to view the results of your procedure. Though it is normal to experience some amount of swelling after rhinoplasty, there are several things you can do to reduce your swelling and speed up the healing process.

It is important to remember that everyone heals at a different rate and that there is no way to accurately predict how much or how long you will experience swelling after your procedure. However, most people will see their initial post-op swelling go down within two weeks of surgery. Minor amounts of swelling may persist for several months, but it won’t be visible from more than a few feet away.
What should I expect after my rhinoplasty?
Swelling isn’t the only thing you can expect after your rhinoplasty surgery. Your nose will be packed with gauze and a splint will be placed on the outside of your face for protection for a week or two following surgery. You may also have some bruising around your eyes, which is normal and should disappear in about two weeks.
The severity of the procedure and the care taken after the surgery will influence how long it takes for swelling to go down.
But even with great care, there is still a long healing process involved.
The initial swelling after rhinoplasty can take up to two weeks to go down. At this stage, you will have visible bruising and swelling on your nose and around your eyes. As you heal, the swelling should subside.
However, it can take up to a year for all of the swelling to go down. This is because nasal tissues need time to heal and adjust. During this period, you may experience occasional bouts of nasal congestion as your nose adjusts.
Dr. Stong: The swelling from rhinoplasty surgery can take at least 6 weeks to completely subside, but in my experience it can sometimes take a year for all of the swelling to dissipate. This also depends on how much work was performed during your procedure and how difficult the recovery was for you. If you had significant bruising or bleeding, this will make the swelling worse and last longer. I recommend following up with your surgeon to discuss any concerns you may have
Swelling can take up to a year to go down. It usually subsides within the first 2 weeks but can last for months or years in some cases. This varies from person to person and some people may have more swelling than others.
The most common cause of swelling after rhinoplasty is trauma during surgery. If you were hit in the nose while playing sports, it could be due to trauma. Other causes include infection, blood clots and other complications that could occur as a result of surgery itself such as scarring or bleeding.
Sometimes swelling lasts longer because there was not enough tissue removed during the procedure and now it has to grow back on its own time frame with no external support from bones or cartilage structures.
Most surgeons recommend waiting at least 6-9 months before deciding whether or not another revisionary surgery is necessary to correct any residual problems from rhinoplasty such as crookedness after rhinoplasty, asymmetry after rhinoplasty and so forth.
If your symptoms persist longer than expected, it might mean that something went wrong during surgery itself which can lead to complications later on like scarring or bleeding which would need further medical attention immediately!”
The answer depends on the type of rhinoplasty you had.
The swelling after an open rhinoplasty will take about a year to resolve. The nose look better and better over the course of that year, but the year mark is when it will look its best.
The swelling after a closed rhinoplasty tends to resolve more quickly, and people tend to be happier with their results sooner. The closed rhinoplasty also has a quicker recovery time than the open rhinoplasty.
So, there really is no one answer to this question, because it depends on what you had done.
If you are unhappy with your results at any point during recovery and wish to discuss them with your surgeon, please do so. It’s much harder now to fix any issues that arise than it would have been in the immediate post-op period.

There is no way to know if you will get a bump or not once the swelling goes down. If you do end up with a bump, it may be able to be fixed with revision surgery, but there is no guarantee.
It is very common to still have some swelling 3 weeks after rhinoplasty. In fact, it may take one year or longer for all of the swelling to resolve. I tell my patients that they will look pretty good at 1 week, feel pretty good at 2 weeks, look better at 1 month and feel great by 2 months. After that the recovery is just fine tuning. It is normal to be swollen for three weeks after rhinoplasty. There are several factors that can contribute to prolonged swelling, including your skin thickness and the type of rhinoplasty that you underwent.
Overall, if the skin is thick, there will be more swelling, but that usually resolves within six months. If the patient has had a septoplasty–which is surgery on the normal partition between the two sides of the nose–the columella could still be swollen and distort the appearance of your nose as well.

It is possible to see some swelling at this point after surgery. In my opinion, the tip appears somewhat full and that may be swelling. I would suggest continued massage of this area and if you have concerns, I would suggest following up with your surgeon.
