The NFL is one of the most popular sports in America. The league has grown to include 32 teams, with a new team set to join in 2020.
The NFL was founded in 1920, but its roots date back to 1869. That’s when the first professional football league was established. It lasted until 1876, when it folded because of financial troubles.
In 1920, the American Professional Football Association was formed by representatives from several teams that had played in the National Football League (NFL) during its inaugural season of 1920. In 1922, this league changed its name to the National Football League.
Over time, more and more teams joined the NFL until its roster reached the current number of 32 teams today:
AFC East: Buffalo Bills (1960), Miami Dolphins (1966), New England Patriots (1960), New York Jets (1960).
AFC North: Baltimore Ravens (1996), Cincinnati Bengals (1968), Cleveland Browns (1999), Pittsburgh Steelers (1933).
AFC South: Houston Texans (2002), Indianapolis Colts (1954 as Baltimore Colts), Jacksonville Jaguars (1995 as Jacksonville Jaguars), Tennessee Titans
- New England Patriots – Boston, Massachusetts
- Dallas Cowboys – Irving, Texas
- Philadelphia Eagles – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Houston Texans – Houston, Texas
- Indianapolis Colts – Indianapolis, Indiana
- Jacksonville Jaguars – Jacksonville, Florida
- Tennessee Titans (formerly the Oilers) – Nashville, Tennessee
- Minnesota Vikings – Minneapolis/St Paul, Minnesota
- Detroit Lions – Detroit, Michigan

How many NFL teams no longer exist?
The NFL has been around for more than 100 years and has had over 400 franchises. The number of teams in the league today is 32, with two more coming by 2021. But how many NFL teams no longer exist?
There have been hundreds of teams that have played in the NFL since it was founded in 1920. Since then, some have folded while others were relocated or merged with other teams (like the Cleveland Browns). Still others changed their names or just disappeared into history.
Here are nine NFL franchises that no longer exist:
Brooklyn Dodgers (1946-1948)
New York Yanks (1949-1950)
Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs (1960-1962)
Boston Patriots/New England Patriots (1960-1970)
The NFL is a league with a rich history, dating back to 1920. Throughout its history, there have been many teams that have folded or merged with other teams. Some of these teams were so bad they were able to fold without ever winning a game.
The following is a list of NFL teams that no longer exist:
Baltimore Colts (1950-1983) – The Colts were one of the original American Football League franchises, joining in 1953 when the league first expanded beyond its original four teams. They played in Baltimore until relocating to Indianapolis in 1984 after the city refused to build them a new stadium.
Cleveland Rams (1936-1945) – The Rams franchise began in 1936 when the NFL expanded from 12 teams to 20. The team was based in Cleveland until moving to Los Angeles prior to their 1945 season.
A total of 28 NFL teams have been absorbed or relocated since 1920, the year of the league’s founding. The NFL is constantly changing, and some teams have come and gone over the years.
Below is a list of NFL teams no longer in existence:
The Akron Pros (1920-1926)
The Canton Bulldogs (1921-1923)
The Cleveland Indians (1922)
The Columbus Panhandles (1923-1925)
The Dayton Triangles (1923-1925)
The NFL is a constantly evolving league. The teams that make up the league change from year to year, and some franchises have even folded. Some of these changes have been forced by relocation, while others have come about due to changes in ownership.
In some cases, the team has changed its name as well as its location. For example, the St. Louis Cardinals moved to Arizona in 1988 and became the Phoenix Cardinals. In some cases, the team has moved to another city but kept its name and logo intact (as was the case when Baltimore left Cleveland in 1996 and became the Baltimore Ravens).
In other cases, teams have been rechristened as entirely new entities (as was the case when Cleveland changed its name to “Cleveland Browns” after 1957). In yet another example, Los Angeles had an NFL team from 1946 until 1994 when it left for Anaheim and became known as “Anaheim Angels.”
What are the original 6 NFL teams?
The original six NFL teams are the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, Detroit Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles.
The National Football League (NFL) was first created in 1920 and consisted of only 10 teams. The league added two more teams in 1921 and another two in 1922. It wasn’t until 1933 when the NFL became a 12 team league with the addition of the Chicago Bears and the Portsmouth Spartans.
In 1960, NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle sought to expand his league by adding two more teams. He chose Minneapolis-St Paul as one of these new franchises, but it wasn’t until 1961 that the Minnesota Vikings began playing football games. The other new team was awarded to Los Angeles and played its first season in 1961 as well. The Los Angeles Rams had been playing since 1936 as an independent team before joining the NFL in 1937 after winning a bidding war against Green Bay for their services (the Packers were going to relocate there).
The last two expansion teams were added in 1970 when Commissioner Rozelle again decided to expand his league and add two more teams: Atlanta Falcons (formerly Atlanta Falcons) and New Orleans Saints (formerly New Orleans Saints).
The original National Football League (NFL) teams were the six professional American football teams that formed the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before the 1922 season. The APFA changed its name to the National Football League in 1922.
The NFL was founded in Canton, Ohio, on September 17, 1920, and became the first major-league professional sports league to successfully make the transition from a local operation to a national one. Although several other major professional sports leagues have since made this successful transition, it was under unique circumstances: The NFL operated in small towns where amateur and semi-pro clubs previously held sway. Two of the league’s first three teams were located in Ohio and another was in Illinois. Within five years of its founding and after some threatening letters, the league had grown to 22 teams. In 1920, these teams all played against each other twice; there were no playoffs or championship game with all games being played on a neutral field during this inaugural season. By 1925, there were 12 teams in cities such as Detroit and Chicago; but only one team existed west of Racine Avenue (the Bears), while only two other teams existed east of Racine Avenue (the Cardinals and Packers). When it was decided that
The original NFL teams were the Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Indians, Dayton Triangles, Decatur Staleys and Rock Island Independents. All of these teams were from the American Professional Football Association (APFA). The league was founded in 1920 and would later change its name to the National Football League (NFL) in 1922.
In 1926, the APFA changed its name to the National Football League (NFL), which it still is today. In 1936, a new team called the Boston Redskins entered the league. This was done so because George Preston Marshall owned a minor league baseball team with that name in 1932. After being denied permission by the city council to use Boston Stadium as a home field for his team he decided that he wanted to change his team’s name so that they wouldn’t be confused with any other sports team in Boston. He decided on Redskins because it was an Indian nickname for Native Americans.[1] In 1937, another team known as the Chicago Bears joined the NFL making it an even 12 teams total.[2]
The last expansion team before World War II was added in 1942 when George Halas bought out H R “Red” Bla

What are the 8 NFL divisions teams?
The NFL has eight divisions. They are:
AFC East – Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets
AFC North – Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers
AFC South – Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans
AFC West – Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers
NFC East – Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins
NFC North – Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings
NFC South – Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The NFL is divided into eight divisions, each of which has four teams. The four division winners and two wild-card teams from each conference form the 12-team playoff field.
North: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings
South: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The NFL’s eight divisions are organized into a scheduling structure that ensures that teams in the same division will play each other twice over the course of a four-year period. The teams in each division are listed below:
AFC East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets
AFC North: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers
AFC South: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans
The NFL consists of 32 teams, divided into two conferences and four divisions. The NFC has 16 teams, and the AFC has 16. Each conference has four divisions: North, South, East and West.
The NFL was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA). In 1922, it changed its name to the National Football League.
Since 2002, each team has played 16 games during the regular season. The top eight teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs at the end of the season.
NFC East – Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets
NFC North – Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions
What is the strongest division in the NFL?
The NFC South is one of the strongest divisions in the NFL. The New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers have combined for six Super Bowl appearances and three wins since 2001.
Here’s a look at some of the other strongest divisions in the league:
NFC West: Seahawks, 49ers and Cardinals have combined for four Super Bowl appearances since 2002.
AFC East: Patriots, Jets and Dolphins have combined for five Super Bowl appearances since 2001.
AFC North: Steelers and Ravens have combined for three Super Bowl appearances since 2000.
The NFL has 32 divisions, but which one is the strongest?
The answer to this question depends on what you consider strength. Is it the best teams? The best players? The most exciting games?
The NFC East might be the strongest division in terms of overall talent, but there are certainly other divisions with more stars. And while some fans might argue that the AFC West is home to the most exciting offenses or defenses in football, that’s mostly because it features two of the most explosive teams in football: the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs.
But when we look at how each division stacks up in terms of average talent level, we find that it’s actually not too hard to sort them out by strength.
I took all 32 teams’ rosters and measured their average Player Rating (PR) using our Elo ratings model (explained here). Then I ranked them from highest-rated to lowest-rated, and assigned each team a rating from 1 through 32 based on its position on this list.
What did I find? There isn’t one dominant division among all 32; instead, there are three groups: The top four divisions are pretty close together
It’s a matter of opinion, but I think the NFC South is the strongest division in football right now.
The Falcons, Panthers and Saints are all playoff teams and have been for some time now. The Bucs are on their way up after drafting Jameis Winston with the first overall pick in 2015.
The NFC West is also very good, but it doesn’t have as much depth as the NFC South. Seattle has won two Super Bowls in four years and has appeared in two others during that span. Arizona was a bad team for years before hiring Bruce Arians as head coach in 2013. They’ve made three straight playoffs appearances under Arians, including last season when they went 13-3 and won the NFC Championship over Carolina before losing to Denver in Super Bowl 50. The Rams are still looking for their first playoff appearance since 2004 when they went 10-6 and lost to Philadelphia 27-16 in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
The NFC South is the strongest division in football. The Falcons won the Super Bowl, and every other team in the division has made it to at least one conference championship game since 2013.
The Panthers, who have missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, are expected to return to form. They have one of the best defensive players in history and a young quarterback who showed flashes of brilliance last season. If Carolina can get its offensive line figured out, it should be competitive again this year.
The Saints are always among the most talented teams in the league, but they’ve had trouble getting over the hump and winning titles recently. New Orleans’ window might be closing on Drew Brees’ career, as he turns 40 before next season starts and has shown signs of decline over his last two seasons. If there’s any time for Sean Payton’s team to win it all with Brees under center, it’s now.
The Buccaneers still have plenty of questions about their roster after a disappointing 6-10 campaign last year that saw them finish fourth in their division and miss out on the playoffs for the fifth straight season. Tampa Bay is hoping Jameis Winston can lead them back into contention, but he hasn’t done much during his first two years

How many NFL divisions are there?
There are eight divisions in the National Football League. The divisional setup is a way for teams to be grouped together, and there are several factors that affect how the divisions are determined.
The NFL has 32 teams, but only 30 of those teams play in a given season. Two teams have to sit out each week due to scheduling issues. That leaves 28 teams available for each week of the season. The NFL uses a formula to determine which teams will play each week based on previous results and other factors.
The first thing that determines which division a team plays in is its conference affiliation. There are eight divisions in total: four divisions in each conference (the AFC and NFC). Each team plays 14 games within its division during the regular season, while all interdivisional games take place over the course of just two weeks near the end of the season — Week 14 and Week 15. These two weeks are known as “rivalry weeks,” because they feature many games between rivals who don’t see each other all year long due to their different schedules (for example, an NFC North team might play an AFC North team in Week 15).
The second factor affecting which division a team plays in is whether or not it made it into the playoffs last year — if so
How is the NFC and AFC divided?
A National Football Conference (NFC) team is a member of the National Football League (NFL) that competes in the National Football Conference (NFC), a division of the NFL. The NFC is one of the two conferences, along with the American Football Conference (AFC), that make up the NFL.
The NFC has 16 teams, and its members are located in East and West Coast regions of the United States. The conference is divided equally into 2 divisions: The National Football Conference North (NFC North) and National Football Conference South (NFC South).
The NFC was formed in 1967 as part of the merger between the NFL and its rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It consisted of 13 teams at the time. In 1970, two more teams were added to bring it to its current total of 16 teams.
The AFC was established in 1960 as part of an expansion plan proposed by Lamar Hunt when he bought over several struggling franchises from other leagues to form his own league called the American Football League (AFL). He wanted to include all major cities on both coasts, so he merged his league with another league called The Big Eight Conference that included many eastern cities such as Boston
What is AFC and NFC?
NFC is a short-range wireless technology that allows data to be exchanged between two devices by bringing them in close proximity. NFC stands for Near Field Communication and it’s based on the same radio frequency (RF) as the RFID tags used in some toll collection systems.
NFC tags can be read by most modern smartphones, allowing them to be used for a variety of purposes. For example, you could use an NFC tag to unlock your car, open a door or pay for something at a shop by tapping your phone against it.
Because NFC uses RF to communicate with other devices, the range is quite small — typically less than 10cm — so it’s only useful if both devices are in direct contact with each other.
AFC is an older technology that was developed before NFC and uses different frequencies (13.56MHz as opposed to 13.56MHz). It’s also known as Radio Frequency Identification or RFID and has been around since 1962 when it was invented by George C. Papanicolaou at MIT as a way of tracking inventory in factories using automated conveyor belts.
How many NFL teams are in each division?
The AFC and NFC divisions have four teams each. The AFC North has the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. The AFC South has the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans. The AFC West has the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders. The NFC North has the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. The NFC South has the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The NFC West has the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams
