Lip Filler Swelling Timeline

Lip filler is a very common cosmetic procedure, and most of the time it goes very well. However, there are a few things that can go wrong with lip fillers, including uneven swelling after lip fillers. Uneven swelling after lip fillers can be caused by a number of things. Here's what you need to know: Proper injection technique A skilled injector will be able to tell if a patient has an underlying tendency toward uneven swelling after lip fillers and know how to address it. For example, some patients might have areas where blood flow is slow or restricted because of scarring from prior lip filler, or blood vessels that are closer to the surface of the skin than others. Uneven swelling after lip filler is very common. It will go away with time. The initial swelling is due to the inflammation caused by the filler. It's not uncommon to have uneven swelling for a few days after treatment. This can be due to asymmetry of your lips, small blood vessels which are more prominent on one side or even the depth of injection. In my office, I always overcorrect the lip and then massage a bit back. This leaves them slightly voluptuous at first but they will settle into a natural look within a day or two. I would give it about 10 days for the swelling to go down and then assess how you like your look at that point. If you're still not happy, I would seek out an experienced injector who has expertise with lips and fillers. I've seen this a few times in my practice, and I can assure you that you are not alone! The first thing to remember is that your lips will still go through a bit of swelling after your procedure. It can sometimes take up to a week for the swelling to completely subside. If by next week, you still see some asymmetry, you'll want to go back to your doctor and let them know that you are still experiencing some residual unevenness. In some cases, more injections may be needed. In the meantime, if you're feeling self-conscious about the unevenness, there are a few things you can try at home to help it appear less noticeable: 1) Makeup: Try applying concealer or lipstick in a darker shade than usual to your more swollen lip. This can help draw attention away from the unevenness. 2) Cool Compresses: Cool compresses can help reduce swelling. You should use these for short periods of time (e.g., every 20 minutes for 10 minutes) for no longer than 48 hours after your injection. Just like how the earth's gravity pulls water down and causes fluid retention, so too does our body retain fluid and cause swelling. The lymphatic system in our bodies are responsible for removing excess fluid by transporting it to the blood stream. The lymphatic system has had a lot of exposure over the past few years with the rise of lymphatic drainage massage in spas. This is a type of massage that manually moves the fluid to facilitate the removal of excess fluid accumulation. It's kind of like "unclogging" a drain - moving everything so it can pass through more efficiently. I am not sure if this would be effective in your situation, but it's something you can discuss with your doctor or even try at home as part of your recovery from lip filler. Swelling after lip injection is normal for the first few days. There are times however if the swelling does not resolve within 1 week, it is important to return to your injector so he/she can access your lips, and see what is going on. The most important thing is to be patient and wait at least one week, or longer if necessary, before making any judgements about the outcome of your procedure. In my practice I see swelling (and bruising) vary from patient to patient. I would recommend being seen by your injector to make sure that this is normal swelling, and not an infection.

Lip Filler Swelling Timeline is variable depending on the filler used. Usually, lip filler swelling lasts for 2-3 days after treatment. You may have additional swelling from the local anaesthetic used during your treatment which tends to last for a few hours. If you are prone to cold sores, we will prescribe an antiviral tablet … Read more
