Why Did Victoria’s Secret Stop Selling Hand Sanitizer?

Victoria’s Secret, the lingerie retailer owned by L Brands (LB), abruptly stopped selling hand sanitizer during the coronavirus pandemic, even though it had previously sold a version of the product.

The company has stopped selling hand sanitizer in its stores, even though it once sold a 2-ounce bottle of Victoria’s Secret Pink Hand Sanitizer with moisturizers and Vitamin E for $8.50. It still sells an aromatherapy line of hand creams. The company did not respond to multiple requests from CNN Business for comment on its hand sanitizer business.

Selling hand sanitizer is not unusual for a retailer, particularly one that caters to younger women, but Victoria’s Secret’s decision to stop selling it comes as retail competitors race to get the product on their shelves amid the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak. Bath & Body Works, another L Brands company, is still selling a citrus gel hand sanitizer that it says kills 99% of germs.

H&M and Sephora are also still selling hand sanitizers online, while Ulta Beauty said in an email to customers last week that “hand hygiene is more important than ever” and directed them to its website where they could find

“We have temporarily removed hand sanitizer from our stores, so we can provide it to health care workers and first responders, who are on the front lines of this crisis,” a Victoria’s Secret spokesperson told CNBC Make It.

Victoria’s Secret’s lapse into hand sanitizer sales is embarrassing, but the company isn’t alone in its confusion. As retailers of all kinds rush to sell more products in more categories, many are struggling to define their own identities.

In recent years, Target has been reinventing itself as a discount department store, offering an ever-growing selection of grocery items and household goods. It sells everything from furniture to baby formula.

But it still considers clothing and accessories to be an important part of its business. The company spent $7 billion to buy Shipt, a grocery delivery service, last year and another $550 million on same-day delivery startup Grand Junction this spring.

Victoria’s Secret went all-in on athleisure last year when it started selling yoga pants. But like Target, it continues to offer shoes and clothing, too.

It also sells beauty products online — including some items made by VS Beauty, a subsidiary that also makes fragrances for Bath & Body Works and other brands owned by L Brands (LB).
