Denatured alcohol home depot; The Home Depot Logo; The Home Depot’s selection of denatured alcohol includes a variety of options, including eco-friendly formulas made from renewable resources.
Whether you’re looking for a fast-drying formula for cleaning up spills or an industrial grade solvent for painting or staining, we carry the right denatured alcohol products to get the job done.
Denatured alcohol is used as a solvent and as fuel for alcohol burners and camping stoves. It is also used as a repellent for garden pests such as slugs and snails, and can also be used to remove permanent marker stains from hard surfaces like metal, glass and plastic. Denatured alcohol can also be used to clean brushes after painting.
I am trying to buy some denatured alcohol at my local Home Depot, but they do not carry it. Is there something else I can use in its place? What is the difference between denatured and other alcohols?
Denatured alcohol is ethanol (ethyl alcohol) made unfit for human consumption by adding one or more chemicals (denaturants) to it. In some cases it may also be dyed. Denaturing refers to removing a property from the alcohol (being able to drink it), not to chemically altering or decomposing it, so denatured alcohol contains ordinary ethyl alcohol.
We also have a selection of denatured alcohol products that can be used as a fuel for marine stoves and alcohol burners. Some of our denatured alcohol products are compliant with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s clean air act for some paint-thinning applications in certain states. Denatured ethanol is also used as a solvent for thinning shellac, preparing it for application on wood.
At The Home Depot, you’ll find a large selection of denatured alcohol products from brands such as Klean-Strip and Sunnyside Corporation to help you get the job done right.

Denatured Alcohol is a mixture of Ethyl Alcohol and Methanol. It is used as fuel in alcohol burners and camping stoves. The Methanol component renders it unfit for human consumption.
Denatured Alcohol comes in a variety of formulations, depending upon how it is to be used (fuel, solvent, etc.). The formulation recommended for fuel (such as in alcohol burners and camping stoves) is generally denatured with 10% Methanol.
Denatured Alcohol. Denatured alcohol is used as a solvent and as fuel for spirit burners and camping stoves. It is also a main ingredient in producing shellac. Manufacturers denature alcohol to prevent people from drinking it. Denaturing the alcohol makes it undrinkable, but still useful for other applications.
Denatured alcohol is ethanol (ethyl alcohol) made unfit for human consumption by adding one or more chemicals (denaturants) to it. Denaturing refers to removing a property from the alcohol (being able to drink it), not to chemically altering or decomposing it, so denatured alcohol contains ordinary ethyl alcohol.
Denaturing alcohol does not chemically alter the ethanol molecule. Instead, bittering agents such as bitter almond oil, denatonium, or sawdust are added to prevent humans from drinking it. Other uses of denatured alcohol include fuel for spirit burners and camping stoves and as a solvent.
The main additive has traditionally been 10% methanol, methyl alcohol, giving rise to the term “methylated spirits”. Other additives may be used to discourage recreational consumption; common examples include isopropyl alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, and denatonium.
Is Paint Thinner the Same as Denatured Alcohol?
Denatured alcohol is just regular alcohol (ethanol) made undrinkable by the addition of methanol, which is a toxic chemical. Paint thinner is usually mineral spirits.
If you have some denatured alcohol, you can use that as paint thinner. If a recipe calls for paint thinner, though, I’d use mineral spirits.
Denatured alcohol is the commercial name for a blend of ethanol with other additives. However, in the home, denatured alcohol is usually known as methylated spirits or by its initials, M.E.K.
Paint Thinner is a very general term used to describe any product that thins paint.
Denatured alcohol and paint thinner are not interchangeable.
Paint thinner and turpentine are both solvents. They will remove most paint, but they also have fumes that are more harsh than denatured alcohol.
Denatured alcohol is just ethanol with some additives that make it poisonous so people won’t drink it. It’s also cheaper than either of the other solvents mentioned here.
Given a choice between the three, I would use the denatured alcohol because it will be easier on your lungs, and you can clean up the brushes easily with water afterwards.
“Denatured alcohol” is a common term for ethanol that has had other chemicals added to it to make it poisonous.
In the US, denatured alcohol is ethanol with methanol added to it, usually at a ratio of 5-10% methanol. The methanol is added because methanol itself isn’t taxed as much or at all, depending on its use. Methanol also is a lot more dangerous than ethanol, so it makes the resulting cocktail less attractive for human consumption. In addition to making it poisonous, denaturing makes the ethanol unsuitable for food processing or drug use (for example, lotions and such).
Paint thinner often refers to mineral spirits (which are used in paint thinners), but may refer to any of a number of other substances which can be used to dilute oil paints.
Paint thinner and mineral spirits are not the same thing; paint thinner is a petroleum distillate and mineral spirits are an aliphatic solvent.
Paint thinner is a mineral spirit and can be used in place of denatured alcohol. Paint thinner is mineral spirits, but in a less refined form. It contains other types of solvents, which makes it a lot smellier and more volatile. It’s also a lot cheaper.
Both can be used to thin oil-based paints and varnishes and to clean paintbrushes. Denatured alcohol is not the same thing as isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, which you might have at home already; rubbing alcohol has other additives that make it unsafe for this purpose.
Denatured alcohol is a solvent that can be used as paint thinner. It can also be burned as fuel, although it is not legal to do so in many countries.
Paint thinners are generally made from either mineral spirits or naphtha. Thinner for oil-based paint should have “mineral spirits” or “paint thinner” on the label. For latex paints, check for the words “lacquer thinner” or “varnish maker and painter’s naphtha,” which indicate a strong solvent. Solvents such as acetone, lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol are extremely flammable.
The short answer is no. Paint thinner and mineral spirits are both solvents that can be used to thin oil paint. However, they have different chemical compositions and serve slightly different purposes.
The most important difference between paint thinner and mineral spirits is that the former is a petroleum distillate, while the latter is made from distilled coal.
Paint thinner is a very generic term. It can cover any of a number of solvents that are used in painting and decorating industries, including turpentine, toluene, xylene and white spirit.
Mineral spirits, also called white spirit or mineral turpentine, has a similar composition but with a slightly higher boiling point than paint thinner. It’s often used as a degreaser for cleaning oil-based paints from brushes and tools.

Hi John Doe!
Sorry I’m late getting to this question. The Klean Strip brand is not one of my favorites but I went to their web site and found the following information:
“What percent alcohol is Klean Strip denatured?
Klean Strip denatured alcohol contains about 90% ethyl alcohol. You may need to purchase methanol or methyl hydrate separately.”
Klean Strip Denatured Alcohol is a mixture of ethyl alcohol and methyl alcohol. The mixture of alcohol is 95% ethyl alcohol and 5% methyl alcohol. Methyl alcohol is toxic. While it has a high flash point (55 degrees Fahrenheit), the presence of toxic chemicals means that vapor can form explosive mixtures with air.
Klean Strip Denatured Alcohol is an effective cleaner for glass and metal items. It can also be used as a fuel for marine stoves or camping stoves.
Here is a comprehensive list of all the products that contain denatured alcohol. Most of these are available in your local hardware store or Home Depot.

“I’m not sure what you’re asking. It’s mostly a mixture of methanol and ethanol, with some other isopropyl alcohol thrown in the mix. All are toxic, but the methanol is the real killer. I don’t think there’s any way to tell what percentage of each you’ve got without a lab analysis, since they’re all clear and colorless.”
