I have a Rinnai tankless heater that has been working without problems. From time to time we get error code 11, which is the exhaust sensor is too hot. I have checked the wiring and tightened the connections. This problem usually clears itself and goes away for several weeks or more. I have more recently started getting error code 11, but does not clear on its own. I have to turn off power to the unit and then it resets itself and works fine again for a while. Any ideas?
The water temperature has been set too high.
Turn the temperature down to at least 120°F (49°C).
The hot water supply piping is clogged or blocked.
Turn off the unit and call a licensed Rinnai installer.

- Flammable gas leak detection
(A) Definition
“Flammable gas leak detection” means a device or system of devices used to detect the presence of flammable gases in areas where such gases may be present in quantities that could create explosive or ignitable mixtures. The device shall be designed and calibrated to respond to the flammable gases for which protection is intended, and to operate within a range of concentrations from 20 percent of the lower explosive limit (LEL) to 100 percent of the LEL. The system shall include manual shutoff valves located at or near the source of supply, and the design shall provide for automatic shutdown of the source upon detection of gas and ignition.
(B) Installation requirements
(1) Location. The sensor shall be located at ground level or lower in accordance with NFPA 54, NFPA 58, or NFPA 59A, as applicable.
(2) Detection limits. Flammable gas leak detectors shall be capable of detecting methane at 100 percent of the LEL throughout all occupied spaces on every floor level and in every room containing an appliance with direct venting through a sidewall or roof.
