The surface piercing is a form of body modification whereby the skin is pierced with a barbell, commonly on the chest, abdomen or face. Surface piercings are likely to be rejected due to the nature of the location.[1] The technique used in surface piercings allows them to have better healing rates than dermal punch procedures.[2]
The healing time for a surface piercing can take up to a year or more. To prevent rejection, it is important to leave jewelry in place and not move it during healing. If jewelry is removed, there is a risk that the piercing will grow closed.
In the case of rejection of a surface bar, both barbell ends must be reinserted into the piercing channel and allowed to migrate from either side. This ensures that the channel does not scar down. The procedure may take several months and cause discomfort for the client.
